Harry Kane hat-trick gives England food for thought

The Tottenham striker celebrated his first England call-up with a hat-trick in a 4-3 win over Leicester that gives Roy Hodgson a welcome headache By Greg Lea

When Harry Kane spent three months on loan at Leicester City two years ago, no-one could have seen this coming. Just days after earning his first ever senior England call-up for upcoming internationals with Lithuania and Italy, the 21-year-old celebrated that milestone with three goals against the Foxes for hometown club Tottenham.

It was a hat-trick which lifted him above Sergio Aguero and Diego Costa to the summit of the Premier League top scorers’ list - illustrious company indeed.

Despite beginning the season behind Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado in pecking order, Kane now has 19 Premier League goals to his name and 29 in all competitions. It is a phenomenal total for a player who was widely unheralded 12 months ago, and just one less than Jurgen Klinsmann managed for the north Londoners in the 1994-95 campaign.

Kane was barely a toddler when Klinsmann was strutting his stuff at White Hart Lane, and he is now on the verge of surpassing his tally. In an expensively-assembled Tottenham team, it is the local lad from who is leading their charge towards the Champions League.

Beginning the day six points behind Manchester United, this was a must-win game for Mauricio Pochettino and Spurs would not have done it without Kane.

Kane's first goal demonstrated the youngster’s knack for being in the right place at the right time. Eric Dier’s backheeled flick from Christian Eriksen’s corner was a lovely piece of skill, but it would have been easily forgotten but for Kane’s predatory instinct. As Kasper Schmeichel spilled the ball, one man was quickest to react and turn it home.

While it is true that Kane's quickfire second only ended up in the back of the net thanks to a massive deflection from Robert Huth, it was his running and movement that created the chance.

Although he has that rare goalscoring touch, Kane is far more than just a static penalty-box man, willing and able to drift wide and deep to get involved in the build-up. Leicester's inability to handle him saw Matthew Upson withdrawn at the break after being pulled all over the place in the first 45 minutes.

Spurs would have been out of sight were they not so weak in the battle, conceding ground in midfield and displaying nerves in defence that allowed Leicester to draw level and at one point threaten to take the lead.

And then came Kane, once again. His third was from the penalty spot, firing the ball into the bottom corner after Danny Rose was brought down by Nugent, a nerveless conversion under pressure.

In six days’ time, England take on Lithuania at Wembley in a Euro 2016 qualifier. The debate over the past few months had been whether Kane would be included in the squad for that game. Now the only question is whether anyone else can lead the line from the start.

Pochettino is in no doubt. "It's Roy's decision if he starts for England, but it's true he's in a very good moment," the Spurs boss told reporters afterwards.

"With other English strikers, I think he's at the top."
