Manchester United completed a league
double over Liverpool for the first time in three years as two Juan Mata
goals ensured that that Daniel Sturridge’s solitary strike was nothing
more than a consolation goal.
Both teams started the game looking very lively and exciting as both teams looked to attack and conter attack. In the 14th minute however, Manchester United carved Liverpool open as Herrera put Mata through with a well-timed pass. Mata took the ball in stride and finished coolly to give Manchester United the lead. Liverpool pressed as Manchester United looked to hit on the break from that point on. Gerrard came out of the tunnel in the second half, coming off the bench to replace Lallana. The Liverpool captain only spent 40 seconds on the pitch however as a stamp on Herrera in retaliation to a bad tackle left the referee, Matt Atkinson with no choice but to send of the Liverpool veteran in his last northern derby. Manchester United made their numbers count in the 59th minute as substitute, Di Maria played Juan Mata in with a pass over the top. Mata put the ball into the corner with an overhead kick to make it 2-0. Liverpool however showed they have fight as Coutinho played Sturridge in and the Englishman fired the ball home in the 69th minute. Liverpool attacked with serious intensity but Manchester United held on to win the match.
Manchester United have now moved 5 points clear of Liverpool as the red devils’ top four bid seems to be gathering momentum.
