AC Milan have completed the signing of Michael Essien today from Chelsea on an 18-month contract.
The Ghanian anchorman joins the Italian giants and becomes new manager Clarence Seedorf's first signing. Essien held detailed talks with Milan officials throughout Thursday and early Friday and the two clubs have now come to an agreement.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been a big fan of Michael Essien, signing the midfielder for Chelsea and then taking him on loan at the Santiago Bernabeu, when Mourinho was manger of Real Madrid.
However, Essien has made just five Premier League appearances since Mourinho took over in the summer. Essien has only completed 90 minutes once for Chelsea this season - the home victory over Crystal Palace. He was also left out of the Champions League squad by Mourinho. The 31-year old has reportedly made the move to ensure he boards the plane to the World Cup with his native Ghana.
Mourinho had said earlier today during his press conference that he was open to letting Essien leave.
He said: "Michael Essien is in a position at the moment where he can go or he can stay. If he stays we will be more than happy.
"He is a fantastic club man and a fantastic team player.
"But if something big comes for him he is another one who we feel we must show the respect, and to show him the respect is not to stop him from going."
His agent, Fabian Piveteau, said last month: 'Several major European clubs playing in the Champions League were informed and the situation should settle down within the next 10 days.
'You should know that Michael was not on the list of players who can play in the Champions League with Chelsea, so he is free to play in the competition with another club.'
